It is rather funny and concerning even when you notice that leading family businesses haven\u2019t yet formally decided (and if decided then acted) on timely succession.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why so?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Why family-owned businesses\u2019 ownership and operating command do not begin formal succession until they reach age tipping point or ailments or a combination of both?\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why, at large, family-owned businesses think that they have time equivalent to the last day that they will be attending their family businesses? And, that last day will be the same as today?\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why, family-owned businesses begin their serious efforts only after a mishap or loss? Why don\u2019t they proactively work on it?\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And many more similar symptoms of the problem.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>All these symptoms indicate several things to many people including they don\u2019t get many times why they do what they do.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

However, the most fundamental origin to such disastrous delays <\/span>are<\/span> not because they are plain unwise. It is largely because \u2013 they think like owners only.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Owners focus and value return on capital invested (ROIC), maximising wealth gains, and much more at the same time.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At large, consciously or unconsciously, Owners don\u2019t value anything that isn\u2019t value for money.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is where they lose sight of the most finite resource they have at hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span>Time.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The day they primarily, and I repeat, primarily give more weightage to and value time over money \u2013 they will begin maximising return on time, maximising gains by time, and maximising time capital returns.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The shift is significant to be felt by those owners who by strike of coincidence, miracles or conscious decision to begin moving from ownership thinking to leadership thinking.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Signs of transitioned owners who moved permanent address from being an owner to being a steward (who in truth own nothing but time):<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. The owner, now a steward, puts attention away from making money to making timeless methods for continuously generating prosperity for future generations of businesses they are given currently to run\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The owner, now a steward, changes the question from operational advantage with margin, profit, and other bottom line focused metrics for measuring their success to relevance, relentlessness, endurance, health (of organisation), adaptability, thriving as per consumer behaviour economics trends, global market trends, and much more\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The owner, now a steward, worry about succession in ways that are beyond just choosing a successor. The horizon has expanded from heir to right fit for the growth of the enterprise in \u2018way\u2019 that accentuate the performance and character of the identity<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The owner, now a steward, worry about succession in <\/span>objective<\/span>, <\/span>timely<\/span> and at least 15 years of runway period for the successor to really build. He does this to give successor a powerful grip, grit, merit, and real success while the predecessor is still there in super capable position to <\/span>assist<\/span>, guide, give hand and augment. This increases the chances by factor of exponential possibility helping further successor who is already pushing an envelope for mighty growth\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. The owner, now a steward, begins less worry about ROIC but more about profit beating the industry standard margins by sometimes 3x times. And they do it by not honing product at all but getting systematically customer (or consumer focused)\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. The owner, now a steward, thinks in terms of advantages beyond money or wealth, but considers seriously decisions and actioning to increase prosperity and legacy.\u202fHe will now take bold steps highly integral to the greater purpose of the business and in return achieve most ambitious of financial aims.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u2026and many more similar yet profound and positively impactful signs.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The advice owners can apply is \u2013 Take time to pause, reflect and gather courage to move focus away from money and put more on time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
